PHILADELPHIA – The 49ers quarterback with the most rushing yards on Sunday against the Eagles was who everyone expected him to be – Jimmy Garoppolo.
After an entire offseason of chatter about Trey Lance’s mobility, the veteran took it upon himself to keep several discs alive with his legs. Garoppolo was even credited with a rushed touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to make it a two-goal game.
“I think that’s part of being a quarterback,” Garoppolo said. “You have to want it in the moment. Anytime it’s a stealth quarterback or a two-minute drive to the end of the game or a stealth quarterback, I want my number called.
“I know the guys are with me. In the huddle at the end of the game, it was a pretty cool moment, just looking each other in the eye. We’ve done this three times before this and when you get a chance to shut it down it makes a great homecoming. ”
After the game, Kyle Shanahan admitted that he had considered putting Trey Lance on for a few games, but like all game calls, he decided to go in a different direction. Garoppolo had incredible success in the quarterbacks and the head coach went with his instincts.
“He gives me a lot of confidence in those,” Shanahan said. “He’s never been arrested on one. I think the only time he did it was when he made a false start. I think he had 11 to 11 before today. I have been with him for quite a long time.

While the discussion outside the building could be about the overall No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft, the belief at the 49ers headquarters is that this is Garoppolo’s team.
After a slow start, the veteran quarterback ended the day completing 22 of his 30 attempts for 189 yards, a pass touchdown and a rushing score. Garoppolo carried the ball eight times for 23 yards before the last three knees at the end of the game.
“He’s really competitive,” Shanahan said of Garoppolo. move the chains. I think there was a penalty on them too in this game. But Jimmy is a football player.
The 49ers return to the Bay Area 2-0 after their 10-day road trip. The home opener with the Packers is scheduled for Sunday night.
