Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt has been one of the NFL’s top passers for the past decade. The former No.11 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft has led the NFL in sacks twice and recorded 101 sacks in 127 career games. Watt was asked on Thursday if he sees himself playing for the Texans in 2021. His response was not exactly encouraging.
“There are a lot of unknowns, so we’ll see what happens,” Watt said, via Aaron Reiss of The Athletic. “I don’t have any guarantees in my contract anymore, so something has to happen somehow.”
In September 2014, Watt signed a six-year extension worth up to $ 100 million with the Texans. Watt will enter the final year of his contract in 2021 and is expected to receive a base salary of $ 17,500,000, according to Spotrac. More importantly, however, the Texans wouldn’t have to face any kind of dead ceiling if they parted ways with him. As he said, there is no guarantee left in his contract.
In this offseason May, Watt said he would not ask the Texans to extend his contract. He said he did not consider it “necessary” and that he was not going to ask for anything because “it would be a bad decision”.
Watt is the best player in Texas franchise history, with accolades such as five All-Pro first-team selections, five Pro Bowl selections and three years as NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Watt is only two years out of a 16-sack season, but his game has dropped significantly in 2020. He recorded 49 combined tackles in 15 games, which will likely be the lowest total of his career in a season in which he played. double-digit games and recorded only five sacks.
