Gilberto was a bossa nova giant and is often recognized for helping to develop the sound of the genre that brought Brazilian music to the world.
The famous collaboration of the musician with American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, "Getz / Gilberto", won the Grammy Awards of the year album in 1965. According to the Music Department of the 39, Columbia University, it is only one of the few albums, which awarded Gilberto an honorary doctorate in music in May 2017.

According to Agencia Brasil, Gilberto was on stage for the last time 2008 for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the bossa nova.
