Job vacancies hit an all-time high in June

The number of job postings in the United States hit an all-time high in June as employers struggled to find workers amid persistent labor shortages.

The total number of job openings increased by 590,000 to 10.073 million, according to the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Turnover Survey, or JOLTS. The number of vacancies in May was revised upwards to 274,000.

The pace of hiring accelerated, with employers adding 6.7 million workers, 697,000 more than in May.

Hiring increased in all regions with the strongest increase in the South (+2.62 million).

The total number of departures increased from 254,000 to 5.6 million.

In the separation category, 3.9 million workers left their jobs, an increase of 239,000 from the previous month.

Departures increased in professional and business services (+72,000), durable goods manufacturing (+47,000) and public and local government, excluding education (+33,000), while decreasing in government education public and local (-26,000).
