Jobst 3v3 Winner, Bucks Wins Big Ten Title in Michigan

It's official. Ohio State is the 2019 champion of Big Ten Hockey. The Buckeyes finished Saturday with a 3-3 overtime victory in Michigan.

The Wolverines put pressure on Scarlet and Gray early in the game. Their speed and aggression put OSU on their heels. The Bucks struggled for difficult minutes, but they resisted. When an opportunity arose, their power play gave them the advantage.

Seven minutes into the first period, Brendan Warren of Michigan was hit by major knee player Sasha Larocque. Carson Meyer then scored the goal of the opening match.

When the teams returned to an equal level, the Wolverines resumed their attack. At 3:47 pm, Nick Blankenburg rounded Quinn Preston's defense. Head-to-head with Tommy Nappier, Blankenburg slid the puck past goalkeeper Buckeye.

A completely different team from the state of Ohio emerged from the break. The Bucks have become the aggressors. They dominated the first nine minutes of the period, beating Michigan 6-0 and scoring twice. First, Brendon Kearney crossed the blue line and scored his seventh goal of the season before Strauss Mann.

Then Jobst shot a penalty on Michigan. On the power play, John Wiitala is perfectly placed to redirect a Matt Miller pass. The Buckeyes led 3-1.

The Bucks nearly scored a fourth goal just after that, but the back of the game was thwarted by Mann, which thwarted Meyer's training. It would be a crucial game while Michigan is mobilized to even the game. An OSU penalty that followed shortly after Mann's big save allowed Joseph Cecconi to reduce the Buckeyes' lead to 3-2.

It was just the beginning of a long period of work for the Bucks penalty killers. The state of Ohio has been whistled for six more sanctions, including two major ones. (Although the Wolverines used both, they simultaneously imposed minor penalties that reduced their benefits.)

Penalty problems continued to drag the scarlet and gray in overtime. Jobst was called for stumbling at the 5 out of 5 ring. In the end, everything went well. The Bucks have killed the trouble. Jobst came out of the box and went straight to the ice to win the B1G Championship with a breakaway goal.

Looking at this series, you had the impression that the Buckeye captain did not leave Michigan without the Big Ten championship. He, Freddy Gerard and Ronnie Hein worked their cans this weekend. Big hat blow to this trio.

With the two OSU points from tonight's shootout win and Notre Dame's loss to Minnesota, the Buckeyes win the Big Ten title in the 2018-19 regular season. This is the first regular season conference championship for Ohio State since the program won the inaugural CCHA title in 1972.

This is not the kind of game you would like to talk about, other than the fact that the result has won the B1G crown. But that was enough. The Bucks have found a way to get the job done. In the end, that's what counts.
