Joc Pederson turned down the White Sox’s offer

This morning, the Chicago Cubs signed a $ 7 million contract with Joc Pederson. It angered some White Sox fans because the South Siders settled for Adam Eaton on an identical deal in early December.

White Sox fans are used to dealing with the expense of handcuffs during the offseason, and many believed Pederson would have been a feasible option to fill the gap in right field.

Here’s where the story gets even more interesting. This afternoon, Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times reported that Pederson received a one-year, $ 10 million contract offer from the White Sox in December, but turned it down. According to a person familiar with the situation, Pederson asked for more money and was refused. The White Sox then turned to Eaton.

According to James Fegan of The Athletic, the White Sox believe Eaton brings better defense and a more versatile skill set that will complement their roster better. And in December, Pederson was not available for the price he ultimately signed with the Cubs. Add to that Eaton’s willingness to accept a club option, and that sealed the deal for the South Siders.

Pederson would have been a good choice for the White Sox in right field. Last season he hit .143 BA and .681 OPS, but warmed up in the playoffs and posted a .382 BA with three homers and .991 OPS in 37 appearances at home plate. He’s also just one year away from a 36-home season.

Pederson’s deal with the Cubs is a one-year pact, so there’s always the possibility that the former Dodger will wear a White Sox uniform in the future.
