Kentucky stewards suspended 15-day jockey Luis Saez for failing to control his mount and make the necessary effort to maintain a straight course on board Maximum security in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) on May 4th at Churchill Downs.
The maximum safety of Gary and Mary West was disqualified from the victory and ranked 17th by the stewards after it was determined that he had gone out and caused direct interference with Will war and chain reaction interference with Long-range Toddy and Bodexpress.
The stewards made their decision to the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on May 12 and the decision was posted on the KHRC website on May 13. The decision, which follows a film review of May 10, calls for the suspension of Saez May 23 to 27, May 30. June 2, June 6-9 and June 13-14.
The decision indicates that the suspension is "attributable to the inability to control his mount and to make the appropriate effort to maintain a straight line, thereby causing interference with several rivals resulting in the disqualification of his mount".
Saez, who is currently driving at Belmont Park, was featured in the May 10 movie review by lawyer Ann Oldfather of Louisville, Kentucky. BloodHorse.com has asked Oldfather to respond to the decision and will update this story with any reaction or call plans.
Oldfather, who did not have the right to address the commissioners at the May 10 meeting, gave them a video explaining that other riders and horses had contributed to the blame. The stewards did not give any assurance that they would watch the video.
