As the doctor said in the Doctor Who Christmas special 2016, The return of Doctor Mysterio: “Everything ends and it’s always sad, but everything starts again too. And it’s always happy. Be happy.”
After airing the trailer for the upcoming holiday special, Doctor Who: Dalek Revolution, the people behind Doctor Who made those words painfully true after revealing bittersweet news (the type of news the show seems to specialize in). In a live virtual question-and-answer session earlier this month with stars Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, as well as showrunner Chris Chibnall, Whittaker confirmed that while the vacation special will see the return of John Barrowman as as Captain Jack Harkness, he will also see the departure of Bradley. Walsh and Tosin Cole as Graham and Ryan.
“The fam as four is gone,” said Whittaker, who currently plays the 13th Doctor. Walsh and Cole have been part of the main cast of the series since Whittaker’s debut as a Doctor in 2017 in the Season 11 first episode, “The Woman Who Fell to Earth.”
While be careful not to reveal any dreaded spoilers for RevolutionIn the Whittaker story, Whittaker admitted that Walsh and Cole had to carry her to his trailer “just knowing these were the last scenes with … these actors.”
“When you realize it’s the last moment, these four characters [will be together]I felt incredibly bereaved, ”added Whittaker. “Our whole trip was spent with the family.”
Gill, who plays Yaz on the show, added that since the cast still communicate regularly through the WhatsApp chat app, it’s “too early to miss them.” She admitted, however, that she still felt sadness realizing that she had never filmed scenes with them.
“I can tell you it’s very emotional,” Chibnall said, while being careful not to reveal how the characters leave. “I can tell you that we were all in tears watching him. It’s a really big part of the mix of the stage where you get a lot of thrills, a lot of spills, a lot of humor, a lot of Daleks and a lot of emotion. So without spoiling anything, it’s tough – but we don’t mind what it means for this family to have their last moments together. And it was emotional offscreen, it was emotional onscreen. “
Chibnall added, “I hope this looks like a good sendoff for these two characters.”
Walsh and Cole confirmed their imminent departure from the series in a separate interview released by the BBC, with Walsh calling their last episode “quite sad and moving”, while Cole describing its final scene as “moving”.
And as to whether Revolution leaves the door open for them to come back in the future, Chibnall just said, “You’ll have to see, right?”
Revolution Will also see the return of Chris Noth, who will reprise his role as Trump-inspired Robertson from Season 11’s fourth episode, “Arachnids in the UK.”
“We loved his character, he loved being on the show and was really looking forward to coming back,” Chibnall said, adding, “His character’s story was not over.
In Revolution of the Daleks, the family (with the help of Captain Jack) embark on a conspiracy to destroy the world involving the Daleks – but without the Doctor, since they are locked in a space prison.
Revolution of the Daleks airs on New Year’s Day 2021.
