Biden is the second Catholic president in U.S. history, and weekly mass should be a regular part of his schedule. This is a level of devotion to regular church services that has not been seen on the part of recent presidents, who were Christians by profession but intermittently attended church or worshiped in private during their tenure.

And while it’s unclear whether he will adopt a permanent parish in Washington during his tenure, attending Biden’s church will provide a window into how his spiritual side aligns with his politics.

Catholicism is an integral part of life for Biden, who has been a regular at Mass since childhood and attended Catholic schools. He married his first deceased wife, Neilia, in a Catholic church and spices up his political discourse with quotes from Scripture, Catholic hymns and references to nuns and priests he learned in school.

He dated Holy Trinity during his tenure as vice president to former President Barack Obama. The church – the oldest Catholic church in Washington, according to Holy Trinity – was also regularly attended by America’s first Catholic President, John F. Kennedy.

On the morning of his inauguration, Biden attended a service at St. Matthew the Apostle’s Cathedral in Washington, DC, with the four congressional leaders.
