Joe Mixon did not let another big free agent go under the Bengals radar. He tweeted to the team after the release of former defensive striker Buccaneers Gerald McCoy.
The defensive line is not a major concern in Cincinnati, but it is certainly a position that could be improved. Their two current defensive strikers are Geno Atkins and Andrew Billings.
McCoy, if possible, would be an interesting addition alongside Atkins, a two-time Pro member and seven-time Pro Bowlers. Last season, McCoy averaged 17 solo tackles and six quarterback sacks in 17 games.
If it was added, McCoy would replace Billings. Last season, in 16 Billings games, he had 22 solo tackles and 2.5 sacks.
Although McCoy has clearly posted better numbers in 2018, it is essential to note that Billings is seven years younger and was selected with the Bengals' fourth round pick in 2016.
At the same time, the second thing to note is that McCoy's current salary (now old) was $ 13 million. Mike Brown, known for not spending a lot of money, would not likely give McCoy what the market could offer. Billings earns less than $ 750,000.
Andrew Brown, Ryan Glasgow, Josh Tupou and Renell Wren are also classified as defensive strikers. The Bengals do not miss a body in sight. Five of the six played in the league less than five seasons.
Adding an experienced player like McCoy, if he could follow the younger and more energetic players, would not be a bad idea.
