The Pittsburgh Steelers made waves Thursday night in their preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles when the team was said to be trading for inside linebacker Joe Schobert. The Jaguars traded Schobert to Pittsburgh for a 6th round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, while recouping part of his salary in 2021.
A good deal for the Steelers, who needed depth in this role, but there is so much more to this situation than just a player traded to a new team. The process can be difficult and can also have an impact on the performance of the player on the pitch.
Schobert had his first training session with the team on Sunday, and he met the media after his first training session. It was there that he was asked if he thought he could be a player on the commercial block at the end of training camp.
“I think it came out of nowhere from my point of view.” said Schobert. “There was no warning sign or predetermined element. I was talking to the defensive coaches right after I spoke to the GM and they were pretty shocked about it so I think it was just something that came out of nowhere and happened.
The follow-up question was whether Schobert was sad to leave Jacksonville, even though he had only been there for one season.
“Well, I wasn’t sad, but it was pretty stressful, especially in the middle of training camp because I have a wife and kids, a dog, a house in Jacksonville. I’ll have to find the logistics to move them. But I wouldn’t say I was sad, no. Just a little stressful, a little shock to the system.
If you’re like me, you always want to know what’s going on behind closed doors. In that regard, how did it go when Schobert found out he was going to be traded to the Steelers?
“We had a team meeting in Jacksonville around six o’clock.” Schobert recalled. “It was the last meeting of the day, and then after that the GM came over to me and said, ‘Hey, Joe. I need to see you in my office. I was like, “Who?” It’s never a good thing when a GM asks that, but I found out, I think, before pretty much anything. I hear from people finding out on Twitter all the time. They were able to tell me, warn me before something like that happened.
The first person to announce Schobert’s arrival in Pittsburgh was not Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero or Jeremy Fowler. It was his wife. Nonetheless, when Schobert met with the CEO, he received the details of the process.
“The GM just told me that Pittsburgh called 12 hours before I had an appointment with them and was very persistent in trying to make a deal to bring me here. That’s the reason he said. He said, “It’s a good situation. I wouldn’t put you in it if it wasn’t a good situation for you and your family to come to Pittsburgh being on a good team. So that’s what I was told.
Although Schobert has only been in Pittsburgh for a few days, he can already tell the difference between the Steelers and other organizations.
“I think it’s a first class organization. said Schobert. “You can see it, obviously, through the meetings, by talking to the coaches. Everyone has been here for a long time and people know what the norm is. It is included in the meetings and the practice of how to take care of your body from top to bottom. It was only a pleasant surprise for me to come here.
With the thoroughness of the move from Jacksonville to Pittsburgh likely to subside in the days / weeks to come, Schobert will have to do his best to focus on football. His role with the Steelers is relatively unknown at the moment, but the team expect big things from him in 2021. Hopefully he can keep his promises.
