Joey Gallo of the Yankees, the hero of the win against the Mariners | Quick reaction

The crowd wouldn’t take no for an answer. “Joey Gallo! Joey Gallo! he sang over and over, then over and over until he wore out the hero of the night. Gallo ducked his head from under the Yankees’ cover, climbed a step, and flipped his cap.

In the eyes of Yankees fans, he deserved his stripes.

Gallo’s three-point explosion in the seventh inning erased a one-point deficit and propelled a 5-3 win at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night.

It came from reliever Paul Sewald with the Yankees down, 3-2, and it was after two-strike singles from Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Gallo tore a 1-0 slider and pumped his fist hard as he rounded first base.

Gallo, who went 3 for 4, had only had two hits in his first 27 home plate appearances with the Yankees, who acquired him from the Rangers just before Friday’s trade deadline. He has also doubled twice.

Closer, Aroldis Chapman put the runners in the corners with two outs in the ninth, bringing the run even at home. But Mitch Hanigar hit a slider hanging towards the left field warning track to end the game.

Heroism erased a disappointment from reliever Chad Green, who gave up a cheap solo shot to former Mets top prospect Jarred Kelenic to start the seventh that put Seattle in the lead, 3-2. The explosion occurred on a 1-1 curve ball and traveled 343 feet – barely over the wall to the right. It wouldn’t have been a home run in any stadium other than the Bronx.

The victory pushed the Yankees to three games ahead of the Mariners in the race for the American League Wild Card. The Yankees are two games behind Oakland, which controls second place. They have 5 and a half games back for the first-place Rays in LA East. They have 10 out of 0.500 games (59-49) for the first time this year.

With wide receiver Gary Sanchez landing on the COVID-19 injured list earlier today, Kyle Higashioka, his replacement, has chosen. Nestor Cortes started and allowed two runs in five innings. Cortes struck out two, walked three and gave five hits. Zack Britton worked a scoreless eighth and got a big double play to end it.

Mariners starting pitcher Tyler Anderson also allowed two runs in five innings.

The teams exchanged leads early.

The Yankees took the lead, 1-0, in the second inning. Giancarlo Stanton shot a single to lead out of the frame, then Joey Gallo scored a brace in the right corner of the field to put Stanton in third. He would score from there on Gleyber Torres’ sacrifice volley on the next strike at bat. But Mitch Haniger’s sacrifice fly in the next round would match him.

At the top of the third, Kyle Seager was lifting a solo home run off the right field wall, and Kyle Higashioka was responding in the bottom half of the inning on Kyle Higashioka’s number. Higashioka hit him at the end of the bat with an out and the pitcher caught it but didn’t shoot Gallo, who scored from third after starting the inning with a double and moving on a simple.
