NEW YORK – Joey Votto’s remarkable home run tour has reached the biggest city of all.
The Reds first baseman hit a home run in his seventh straight game to help his club claim a 6-2 win over the Mets on Friday at Citi Field. Cincinnati have won four straight games and six of their last eight.
Votto, 37, was leading the sixth inning against freshly-called Mets reliever Drew Smith when he lifted a fastball 2-0 down center for his 21st homerun of the season and a 3-1 lead to Cincinnati. It was also his ninth home run in the last seven games.
Starting July 24 in Cincinnati and up to Chicago and now New York, Votto is just the eighth player in AL / NL history with a seven-game streak and the first since Kendrys Morales in 2018 for the Blue Jays. Votto tied Barry Bonds (2004) as the only player aged 37 or over to hit home runs in seven straight games.
The record for eight consecutive games with a home run is shared by Ken Griffey Jr. (1993), Don Mattingly (1987) and Dale Long (1956).
Votto scored 11 home runs in 25 games in July after reaching 11 games in 54 games in the shortened 2020 season.
After Jonathan India hit a first home run early in the first inning (and then added his second shot in the ninth), Reds pitcher Sonny Gray survived a rocky bottom in the first – where his first four hitters reached and the Mets marked a Course. But Gray escaped a no-strikeout goal jam after that and it was the only earned run he allowed in six innings, with five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
