John Axford of the Brewers for the season with an elbow injury

Brewers lifter John axford will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining significant structural damage to his throwing elbow, manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Adam McCalvy of MLB.com). The veteran right-hander is evaluating his treatment options, Counsell said.

It’s a disappointing blow for a pitcher who just made his comeback on Monday after a three-year absence. The 38-year-old posted one out against the Pirates, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk in what will be his only appearance of the year. Prior to that, he had pitched very well with the Blue Jays’ Triple-A subsidiary in Buffalo, where he pitched 10 2/3 one-run innings with fourteen strikeouts and three walks.

It remains to be seen if Axford will make another comeback. At the very least, he can be proud of the remarkable and successful efforts he has made in recent months to return to the majors with Milwaukee, even though that stint unfortunately ended much faster than expected. Presumably, the Brewers will put Axford on the 60-day injured list when the need for a new 40-man position arises.
