The Brewers announced that the right-hander John curtiss was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his launch elbow. The reliever left his appearance against the Cubs last night with an elbow pain, and he unfortunately suffered a major injury. The team did not specify the severity of the injury and made no mention of Tommy John’s surgery. It is possible that Curtiss is still exploring other means of treatment, but it appears he is on an extended absence no matter what course of action he chooses.
Curtiss only made six appearances for Milwaukee after being acquired from the Marlins in a deadline trade. He blew up five points on his team debut, but Curtiss has performed better in his other five competitions and has had a strong season overall. The 28-year-old pitched 44 1/3 innings of 3.45 ERA balls between Miami and Milwaukee, following a quality campaign with the Rays in 2020. Over the past two seasons, he has an ERA of 2 , 86 out of 69 1/3. frames. His 24.1% strikeout rate is the league average, but he’s been excellent at dodging free passes (5.2% walk rate) after battling madness for much of his time. minor league career.
Milwaukee hasn’t specified a timeline for Curtiss’s recovery, but it would be very surprising if he didn’t miss the rest of the season. If he ultimately needed a Tommy John proceeding, he would most likely also be sidelined for the entire 2022 campaign. Curtiss will not achieve arbitration eligibility until 2023, so there would be little financial costs to Milwaukee by keeping him even though he needs a long rehabilitation process. Curtiss is expected to occupy a spot on the 40-man roster throughout the winter if the Brew Crew is to ensure they retain their rights in the long run.
For now, Curtiss has been placed on the 10-day injured list, as has the left-hander Angel Perdomo (sprained lower back). Brewers activated the right-hander Justin top 60-day IL and left-hander recalled Hoby milner of Triple-A Nashville, with the reinstatement of Topa filling the 40-man roster. The 30-year-old hasn’t pitched all season because of flexor tendon strain.
