John Elway is stepping down as general manager of the Denver Broncos but will retain his title of president of football operations in 2021.
“Working in this role for 10 years and going back to my playing days, I have always tried to do my best to help the Broncos win and improve,” Elway said in a statement Monday afternoon. . “As part of a transition that I have been thinking about for a long time, I have made the decision to take a high role and hire a GM to lead our staff and our football team.

Matt Russell, Elway’s longtime No.2 at the Broncos front office, will not be a candidate. Russell declined the option to interview or stay with the organization.
The Broncos ended their season 5-11 and missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
Elway, who still has a year on his contract, said he would provide “support to our CEO and Vic, providing my perspective, helping with big decisions and acting as a sounding board whenever necessary. With everything that goes into the day-to-day responsibilities of a CEO and how the job has evolved, this structure will allow us to be successful and allow me to focus on the big picture.
Elway added, “It’s a great place with all the resources to win.”
Elway said he would “begin the research immediately with input from Vic and (President / CEO) Joe (Ellis”).
In a statement, Ellis said, “John Elway is the most important and impactful person in Denver Broncos history. I have nothing but gratitude for the way he took on this challenge 10 years ago and helped us accomplish great things as an organization. Over the past few weeks he and I have had a number of very positive – and honest – conversations about improving the team as well as his own future. John has come to this decision, and I fully support him and this new structure. With all of his experience and competitive fire, I know John will be a tremendous resource for the Broncos in this role.
