Ravens coach John Harbaugh could be seen yelling, “Lamar, do you want to go?” just before Baltimore sealed their victory over Sunday Night Football with a fourth conversion. But Harbaugh said he didn’t really have to ask.
Harbaugh told SI.com’s Albert Breer his decision was made: he wanted Lamar Jackson to win the game on the spot, not return the ball to Patrick Mahomes.
“I already knew we were going to go, but it was just a little… I just wanted to make sure,” Harbaugh said. “I really didn’t have an answer [if he didn’t say yes], but I think more than anything, I just wanted to make sure he knew we were going to go because he was heading towards the sideline a bit and talking to someone. I just wanted to make sure he was back in the group ready to go. And maybe he already knew we were going.
Analytical research has conclusively shown that NFL teams should almost always go fourth and 1, and should definitely go fourth and 1 when your options are to either trust the best quarterback in the NFL. to win a yard or give the best quarterback in the NFL a chance to beat you. Harbaugh made the right choice.
