Republican upstart John James conceded his Senate campaign on Tuesday night and praised Democrat Gary Peters for winning his second term as Michigan junior senator.

James’ attempt to topple Peters was one of the most watched Senate races in the country in the 2020 election cycle. The businessman and Iraq War veteran nearly defeated the outgoing Democrat and become the first Republican elected to one of the Michigan Senate seats in more than two decades.

While the race was deemed too close to be called on November 3, Peters ultimately secured a margin of victory of around 92,000 votes. Peters declared victory on November 5.
The James campaign refused to concede the race and stood alongside President Trump’s legal team to raise questions about possible voting irregularities in Wayne County, Michigan. James had called for a postponement of Michigan’s vote certification until an audit could be completed.
However, Michigan State Council canvassers certified the election results by a 3-0 vote earlier this week, effectively scuttling the challenges of the Trump and James campaigns.
In his concession post, James thanked board member Norman Shinkle, a Republican, who chose to abstain from voting and called for an overhaul of Michigan’s electoral processes.

“The election results were certified yesterday and I am pleased that the Solicitors Council, led by Norm Shinkle, called on the legislature to take a top down view of Election Law, but it is too late for me.” , said James.
Control over the US Senate will depend on the outcome of the second-round races for Georgia’s two seats. The Democratic Party can secure a 50-50 tie with wins in those two races.
“Michigan, the 2020 battle for this Senate seat is over, but the battle for the future of this great country will never be over, and I will never back off this battlefield, ever, and neither will you.” , added James.
