A day after Michigan certified its election results, Republican U.S. Senate candidate John James conceded incumbent Democrat Gary Peters the race.
James made the announcement Tuesday night on social media, saying that even though the race for siege is over, “the battle for the future of this great country will never be over.
“I am pleased that the Council of Solicitors, led by Norm Shinkle, has called on the Legislature to conduct a top-down review of the Election Act,” said James. “But it’s too late for me.
He thanked the supporters for their help during the campaign, but noted that he was happy that we could all watch a football game and listen to music again without being bombarded with political ads.
Peters beat James by around 92,000 votes, with 49.9% of the vote, against 48.2% for James. That’s closer than the margin with which Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump in Michigan – over 150,000 votes.
James lost to Senator Debbie Stabenow in 2018 in the race for the other Michigan Senate seat by 175,000 votes.
Several media outlets declared Peters the winner on November 4, the day after the election. James refused to concede until Tuesday night, nearly three weeks later.
James and his team called into question the electoral process in Michigan, including sending a 30-page letter to the Board of State Canvassers requesting an audit of Wayne County’s results and delaying certification of the election. The letter contained allegations of imbalanced ballot books, improper storage of ballot papers and defects in the handling of mail ballots.
James thanked his supporters in Monday’s video and offered his congratulations to Peters, saying “it’s the right thing” to do.
“Senator, you may not remember it, but you and I actually shared a glass of Scotch at a Pistons game a few years ago. So, in the holiday spirit, senator, there is a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label coming soon, ”said James. “Congratulations, sir. I wish you and your family good health and safety this season and the new year.
