This is not a playoff or a failure for Dave Gettleman.
Gettleman’s job as Giants general manager is not on the line for his fourth season.
That’s according to owner John Mara, who met with reporters ahead of practice on Tuesday.
“We are all in the hot seat, with our fans in particular,” he said. “We gave them too many losing seasons. It’s time for us to start winning more games.
When asked specifically about Gettleman, Mara said he wouldn’t classify him as being in the hot seat, despite going 15-33 during his three years as the franchise leader.
“Let’s see what happens during the season, let’s see what kind of progress we’ve made,” said Mara. “I always feel like we have to make the playoffs. … I don’t issue a playoff warrant. I don’t think these do you any good. I don’t think I need to say or do anything to motivate people in this building. They are already motivated. They all are.
Mara said that after the last game of each season, he always thinks about the direction of the team and whether it has the building blocks in place to win a Super Bowl. At the end of this year, he will know more about the future of the franchise.
“If the answer to this question is yes, then we are not going to consider making a change,” he said. “If I feel like we’re backing down, that’s another discussion. … I have the impression that we are heading towards [the right] direction.”
This sentiment echoed what Gettleman had said before Mara. While the GM hasn’t said he thinks the Giants should be a playoff team – Gettleman has refused to put a number of wins on his expectations – he does think they’re set for lasting success. in the years to come.
“I don’t think any of us are doing this to lose,” Gettleman said.
Mara admitted the last four years without a playoff – and eight of the previous nine seasons – had been tough. He’s tired of losing and thinks this season can be different.
“I definitely think we’re a lot better on paper,” Mara said. “I would love to see us show it on the field, win a few games and make the playoffs. ”
