Comedian John Mulaney came out of rehab after two months and is doing well in sober outpatient care, a source exclusively told Page Six.

We have exclusively revealed that Mulaney checked into rehab for 60 days at the end of last year after battling alcohol and drug abuse, including cocaine.

The move came as a shock to 38-year-old fans, even though the seemingly crisp comic had spoken of its earlier struggles with drug addiction in its popular Netflix stand-up specials.

A source said: “John has completed 60 days in rehab and now is in sober ambulatory care. He’s fine, although he’s still not ready to return to work.

When he went to rehab, a source told us, “His fans know he struggled in the past with sobriety, he spoke openly about it. Sadly, he struggled again during the pandemic.

“He’s okay with his recovery, he’s not fighting rehabilitation.

The former “Saturday Night Live” writer’s decision to go to rehab was greeted with a wave of support from fans and other comedians.

In a 2019 interview, Mulaney revealed he started drinking when he was 13. “I drank to get attention,” he said. “I was really extroverted, then at 12 I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.

He said in an Esquire cover story that his drinking also prompted him to start using drugs. He says that while he never liked to smoke marijuana, he “liked” cocaine and tried to take prescription drugs.

“I was not a good athlete, so maybe it was a young man who said, ‘This is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodins and a tequila and I’m still up, ”he says. Who is the athlete now? “

When Mulaney was a teenager, his parents sent him to a psychiatrist, who told him that he was partly a nice child, part “a gorilla who wants to kill the other half”.

And in his 2012 special “New in Town” he said, “I don’t drink. I used to drink, then I drank too much and had to stop. This surprises a lot of audiences because I don’t look like someone doing anything.

After years of passing out and even drinking perfume, the tipping point was a bender from 2005 when he was 23.

He told Esquire, “I went on a bender this weekend that was just, like, disappear and come out of a movie … It was just crazy … I was like, ‘You’re f – king out of control, “” he said. “And I was like, ‘I don’t like this guy anymore. I don’t support him.’ ‘

Mulaney said he quit using cocaine and drinking alcohol within a month of each other. He claimed he didn’t go to rehab, he just went cold turkey and was sober for many years after that.

But last December, Mulaney revealed that he had taken on a writing role on Seth Meyers’ show “Late Night” for the sake of his own sanity.

During my 40s I was like, ‘Why am I going totally crazy and why am I suddenly telling my own wife about my accomplishments? ” well-being. “I really needed a job.”

“I like having a boss and having assignments to do,” he added to Kimmel. “When I’m in charge of something, it’s not really the best thing.”

He added that his psychiatrist agreed with this decision.

“She said to me, ‘Without an external structure, I have no confidence in you to thrive’… and she would know that, because I told her everything in my brain,” he says.

A representative for Mulaney declined to comment.
