At Last week tonight with John Oliver On Sunday, the host challenged the Biden administration’s immigration policies, particularly after recent events in del Rio, Texas, where thousands of Haitian migrants were greeted at the border by officers on horseback, appearing to using their horse’s reins as whips. And one of Oliver’s problems starts with the White House message.

After releasing a clip showing White House press secretary Jen Psaki saying, “That’s not who we are,” Oliver retorted.

“Well wait,” Oliver said. “Because to say, ‘This is not who we are’ about white people chasing black people on horseback is a bit of an exaggeration. Historically, we have accepted this idea since 1619. “

Oliver also broke Title 42, a Trump immigration policy used by the Biden administration to deny asylum seekers under the guise of public health. Worse yet, the way they are treated when fired. After playing a clip of a migrant describing being chained “like animals” when they are sent back on planes, Oliver was not happy.

“It is despicable,” he said.

As he compared the process to decide who gets referred to the process to find a new Jeopardy! host, Oliver said the lack of clarity ultimately hurts people.

“This is all emblematic of further confusion, with one White House official even saying, ‘I have no idea what our immigration strategy is. But we badly need it, and soon, ”said Oliver. “Because we are currently returning vulnerable people at risk. And it’s high time for this administration to stop just telling people who we are and start showing them.

Last week tonight with John Oliver aired on sunday at 11 p.m. on HBO.
