John Oliver Says Adam Driver’s “Obsession” On “Last Week Tonight” was born out of public discontent

John Oliver came by Wednesday Late Night with Seth Meyers where he explained the joke on Last week tonight in which he is uncomfortably obsessed with Adam Driver.

Meyers raised the issue when Driver finally appeared on the HBO show to berate Oliver for his frightening sexual obsession. Oliver explained that originally his “love” for the Star wars the actor was a one-liner of a staff writer. And when he fell flat he got hooked.

“Water on the seed [of the joke] felt real resistance from the public, “said Oliver, noting that the first joke happened before the pandemic hit.” It was as if only 40% enjoyed it. So we did it as a reminder a few weeks later and they weren’t really happy to get it back. So at that point it became kind of an obsession in our staff. “

Oliver said the show finally contacted Driver to see if he could come and play. He agreed and appeared in the season finale where he told Oliver to take him down.
