Director John Singleton, an Oscar nominee, has suffered a stroke and has been hospitalized since Wednesday, his family said Saturday in a statement.

Singleton, 51, remains in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital and is "under excellent medical care," according to the family release.

"We ask that privacy be preserved for him and our family at this time and appreciate all the prayers of his fans, friends and colleagues," the family wrote.

Singleton's debut in producing "Boyz n the Hood" earned him two Oscar nominations and made him the first African-American to win the Best Director award. The other films that Singleton has made are "Higher Learning", "Rosewood" and "Poetic Justice".

His career of more than three decades was followed by television and music videos, hence the blossoming of celebrity happiness wishes like Snoop Dogg in Guillermo del Toro.
