John Singleton suffered a stroke … family members tell TMZ

The legendary director and screenwriter is in the hospital … we learned that he had been recorded earlier this week after having a weak leg. A family member told TMZ that John had returned from Costa Rica and that the flight could have triggered the medical emergency.

We are told that doctors perform tests and also do re-education. The stroke has been described as "mild".

As you know, Singleton is an iconic figure in the entertainment industry, striking like a thunder with his directorial debut … "Boyz n the Hood" in 1991. He was nominated for 2 Oscars – Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He is the youngest filmmaker to have been nominated in both categories.

He had close ties with the Jackson family, Michael JacksonThe video of "Remember the Time" and the realization Janet Jackson in "Poetic Justice". His other credits include "Rosewood", "Shaft", "2 Fast 2 Furious" and "Four Brothers".

Singleton has been praised for leading "The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story," "Empire" and "Billions."

John recently taught at his alma mater … USC Film School. He teaches a course called "Film and Culture".

Aged 51, he also co-created "Snowfall," a chronicle of the crack outbreak in the 1980s in Los Angeles.
