Director John Singleton will be removed from life support, Fox News has learned.
The Singleton family told Fox News Monday that it was an "excruciating decision" taken "over several days, with the thoughtful advice of John's doctors."
"John Singleton is a prolific and innovative director who changed the game and opened his doors to Hollywood, a world just a few miles from the world he grew up in," the statement said.

Singleton was in a coma after a stroke last week. The director's family had previously announced that he had a stroke on April 17, but no details had been revealed regarding the severity of his condition.
Monday's statement said: "John loved nothing more than giving opportunities to new talent and his films were known for his roles with the actors that the industry would address. such as Tupac Shakur, Regina King, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Ice Cube, Tyrese and Taraji P. Henson.

"We thank his fans, his friends and his colleagues for the flow of love and prayers that took place during this extremely difficult time.We would like to thank all Cedars Sinai's doctors for the irreproachable care that he received. "
According to his family, Singleton "struggled quietly against high blood pressure" and asked his fans to learn about this disease by visiting Heart.org.
The 51-year-old director of "Boyz n the Hood" is in intensive care at a Los Angeles hospital. Last week, her mother, Shelia Ward, had filed a case in court, asking that she be appointed temporary curator of Singleton in order to make medical and financial decisions in the event of disability.

Singleton has received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for "Boyz n the Hood", the first black filmmaker to be so recognized. His other work includes "Poetic Justice", with Janet Jackson, and the TV series "Snowfall".

His friends, colleagues and admirers wished him good luck that his poor health was spreading.
Shonda Rhimes, Reverend Al Sharpton and another director, Ava DuVernay, were among the people offering prayers on Twitter.
