The Blue Jackets lost the fifth game in a heartbreaking way when David Pastrnak scored what turned out to be the Bruins winner 1 minute out of 28, and they face an elimination as the series move to Columbus for Game 6 Monday night.
But Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella liked what he saw from his team, so much so that after the match, he promised his team would win the sixth game and return to Boston for the seventh match.
"The increase in the third, we came back, absolutely," Tortorella said. "Things are coming in for a reason, we're likely to catch up again, no, things are happening for a reason, and I really believe so, we'll be back for match 7."
Tortorella was asked a supplementary question about the guarantee, to which he responded by quickly repeating: "We will do it".
When asked what made him so confident, Tortorella once again summarized briefly and simply, "Because we will do it".
There were of course reasons for Tortorella to feel good about the third period. The Blue Jackets scored three goals in a stretch of 3:25 starting at 10:33 of the period to first reduce a 2-0 lead to 2-1, then after the Bruins scored again, turn a 3-1 deficit into a 3-3 tie.
But Columbus also conceded three goals and several opportunities in the grand opening season, and it was the Bruins who found the winner. The Blue Jackets had some good chances to tie in at the last minute, but Matt Duchene hit the post, Tuukka Rask stole Cam Atkinson, and Charlie McAvoy was prepared to block a shot. Artemi Panarin.
Obviously, Tortorella thinks that the result will be different if the Blue Jackets play the same way Monday night, and he is not afraid to give the Bruins the scoreboard.
