Russell Westbrook may want to leave Houston, but his huge contract has made it difficult to find a business destination. John Wall is in a similar situation. According to Athlete’s Shams Charania, he wants an exchange too, but the money makes it difficult to find one. The two owe $ 132.6 million over the next three seasons. They are both poor shooters who seem to be past their prime in terms of age and health. Unsurprisingly, few teams seem interested in taking so much money for either player, so according to Charaniah, wizards and rockets argue with each other.
Wall, recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, may or may not be able to play at a high level next season. At Westbrook, the Wizards would get an equally athletic point guard with less health risk. But the Rockets are well aware of this, and they wouldn’t give the Wizards Westbrook out of kindness. They would give up the best player in the deal, and unlike most possible Westbrook deals, they wouldn’t give up on the worst deal. According to Charania, the deal has yet to gain ground as the Rockets want more assets than Washington has offered. It could involve draft capital, even though the Wizards surprisingly landed rookie Deni Avidja in 9th overall, those picks are likely to come in the future.
Westbrook’s contract severely limits the type of teams that can actually trade for him. Washington appears to be one of the first teams to register real interest. That’s not to say that a deal will happen or even is close, but it’s the most encouraging sign yet that his wish for a trade will be granted.
