Johnny Depp sues his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, in a $ 50 million defamation suit, citing an article she's writing for the Washington Post on domestic violence. The lawsuit stated that Depp had suffered financial losses as a result of these charges, including the abandonment of his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.
The complaint, filed Friday at the Circuit Court of Fairfax in Virginia, said that although Depp was not named in the Post's article, it was clear that Heard was talking about him. The prosecution called his allegations domestic violence "categorically and obviously false".
"They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Mrs. Heard and advance her career," said the lawsuit, claiming that "it's she who is the perpetrator of the crime" .
In his article, published in the Post in December, Heard also said he lost an acting role and a contract with a major fashion brand, due to the publication of his allegations of abuse.
"I stood up against sexual violence – and I faced the anger of our culture," wrote the 32-year-old actress, adding that she felt as if she was "tried by the court of public opinion".
Heard publicists and lawyers have not responded to phone calls or emails from the Associated Press asking for comments on Saturday.
In a statement to People magazine, his lawyer Eric M. George described the lawsuit as "frivolous" and "simply the last of Johnny Depp's repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard."
Depp's lawyer, Adam Waldman, told People that he and his client were eagerly awaiting "overwhelming evidence of videos, photographs and eyewitnesses" that would erase Depp's name.
Heard the first accused Depp of domestic violence in May 2016, the year after their marriage. After Heard brought a photo of her with a bruised face to the court, a judge ordered Depp to stay away from her. The couple met on the set of their 2011 film "The Rum Diary". Their divorce was finalized in 2017.
