Johnny Walker thinks he’s John Kavanagh’s new “project” for UFC greatness

Coach John Kavanagh rose to prominence as an MMA coach by leading Conor McGregor to winning two UFC championship belts, and Johnny Walker is enjoying similar success for him under his tutelage.

The UFC light heavyweight talent has trained all over the world throughout his MMA career and is happy to call Dublin home and train with Kavanagh. Speaking on a recent episode of MMA Fighting’s Portuguese-language podcast Trocação Franca, Walker explained what makes SBG Ireland so unique.

“John trains me like a son here,” Walker said. “He helps me with everything, puts the right guys to train with me. All that I need. I have an excellent report from him.

Walker has attended training camps in Russia, Canada and Brazil in previous UFC fights, including a spell with Firas Zahabi in Canada, but he believes Kavanagh “kissed” him ahead of his clash at UFC Vegas 38 vs. Thiago Santos on Saturday night.

“I think he wants to do a project with me,” said Walker, who currently lives in Kavanagh’s parents’ house. “He wants to do another project, so I bet on him the same way he bet on me.” It’s going to work.”

When asked if he thinks SBG Ireland sees him as “the next Conor McGregor,” Walker is just happy to be the first Johnny Walker and to collect belts in the UFC.

“That’s what everyone believes, brother,” he said. “Everyone is convinced that I have this potential and I put my career at the center of my life now. It just can’t go wrong.

Walker meets Santos at an all-Brazilian main event in Las Vegas and vows to end the fight from a distance – unless Santos is “so well trained” that he is able to survive an assault.

“’Marreta’ is explosive like I am and has knockout power, but I’m ready for five rounds,” Walker said. “I train five rounds a day. 25 minutes is my life now. If I need five rounds, it will happen. If I don’t need it… I can’t predict the future but I have to believe myself.

“I’m going to go and I’m going to either subdue him or knock him out.” I will not leave it in the hands of the judges. But if the guy is unfortunately so well trained and I can’t subdue or knock him out, I will fight five rounds. I’m that guy who will go out there to beat other people and take the bonus. I have fun and bring joy to the fans. I am a showman.
