The first single-dose COVID-19 vaccine could get emergency approval in just two weeks, Dr Anthony Fauci said on Friday evening.
“I would be surprised if it was more than two weeks from now that the data will be analyzed and decisions made” on the vaccine developed by New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson, Fauci said during an appearance on “The Rachel Maddow Show. ”
“We will review the data and determine if it is ready to be released to the public,” Fauci said, “so they can go to the FDA to ask if they can get emergency use authorization. “
Fauci said the US government is working with different companies on six vaccine candidates, two of which have already been given the green light for emergency use, one from Pfizer and one from Moderna. Both of these require a cold room and two doses.
The J&J vaccine doesn’t have the same need to be kept cold, Fauci said, and only requires a single dose. These factors will make a big difference in the ability to hit people, he said. “It gives more flexibility,” he said.
Johnson & Johnson said it expects to have 100 million doses available by April.
Any additional vaccine made available will be a boost for the city and state, which are running out of doses as New Yorkers scramble for immunization appointments. Mayor Bill de Blasio wrote a letter to President Joe Biden on Friday to advocate for new vaccine shipments.
