Joint Base San Antonio drill sergeant gunned down on New Years Day along I-10, officials say

SAINT ANTHONY – A drill sergeant assigned to the US Army Medical Center of Excellence on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston has died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to JBSA.

Sgt. Jessica Mitchell, a 68E dental specialist, was pronounced dead at San Antonio University Hospital around 3 a.m. Friday, according to JBSA.

The unit was informed by hospital staff that Mitchell, who was on leave at the time, had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were sent on a call for a shooting along I-10 near West Avenue about 30 minutes earlier in the morning.

The San Antonio Police Department and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division are still investigating the situation.

Mitchell had been assigned to MEDCoE since August 2019. Prior to this assignment, she had been working at a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We are working to support Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family and soldiers during this extremely difficult time, ”said Maj. Gen. Dennis LeMaster, Commanding General of MEDCoE.
