Jojo Rabbit wins first prize at Toronto International Film Festival, sparking hope for Oscar season

As planned by our own A.A. Dowd in one of his TIFF dispatches, Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbitin which the Thor: Ragnarok The director plays Adolf Hitler, the caricature imaginary boyfriend of a timid Nazi – won the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is particularly worthy of attention, as TIFF has a difficult time with the Oscars, with 10 of the last 11 People's Choice winners receiving (at least) a Best Film nomination. Theoretically, that means Jojo Rabbit should show some good things at the Oscars, assuming members of the Motion Picture Academy are still fans of movies that talk about people united by their love and understanding. Jojo Rabbit not a man who eats a whole pizza like a sandwich, like the winner of TIFF and Best Picture of last year Green paper But an idiot Hitler might be the 2019 version of that.

The finalist at TIFF was Noah Baumbach. Wedding story, which Variety also said to be the subject of much buzz for the potential of the best film, the best director and acting nominations at the Oscars, and the second finalist was Bong Joon-ho Parasite (Variety says it's a lock for the best international feature, which seems to be a safe bet). That means bad news for the Joker Stans, who will have no choice but to express their disappointment on social media now that their clown prince has been eliminated from the race at TIFF, but that obviously does not mean that his own dreams come true. Oscar were broken. After all, what more chaotic and Joker-esque than to reverse the established trends of the film festival?
