The premiere of the film "Joker" at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday night earned an eight minute standing ovation to actor Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips, as well as the captivating yet heartbreaking story that they traced for the nasty Batman.
Phoenix and Phillips were joined in the Sala Grande by Zazie Beetz, who also plays in the film as a neighbor of the Phoenix character. Robert De Niro, who hosts a talk show, did not make the trip to the Lido.
The buzz in Venice was growing around the Warner Bros. movie. since its unveiling last month as part of the programming up to the climax of both press and premiere screenings on Saturday's red carpet. The two press sessions were packed, the second with loud applause in the end and applause when the name Phoenix appeared in the closing credits.
The film is part of the DC Comics universe but is in itself an original story and does not include any appearances of Batman or other crusaders at the cloak. It opens in the United States on October 4th.
Phoenix's performance as Arthur Fleck, a sad bag and a mentally disturbed man who turns into an icon of violent nihilism, is already generating much debate. Earlier Saturday, he had said that previous role tests – such as that of Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" ten years ago – did not influence it.
"I have not referred to any past iteration of the character," said Phoenix. "It seemed to be something that was our creation in some ways."
Venetian Artistic Director Alberto Barbera fanned the awards buzz by claiming that "Joker" is directed "directly to the Oscars".
Variety film critic, Owen Glieberman, also praised the film: "Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as a mentally ill geek who becomes the murderer of the murderous clown Jokerin Todd Phillips: the rare cartoon film that expresses what happens. in the real world. "
After Venice, "Joker" goes to Toronto for another festival arc.
