Jon Favreau from The Mandalorian on Lukę Skywalker’s Big Cameo

Sure The Mandalorian, the characters say, “This is the way.” In the case of big cameo from the second season however, it was not originally.

Now Star wars Fans know that season two of The Mandalorian finished with Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) leaving Din Djarin with a Jedi he connected with via the Force. A Jedi by the name of Luke skywalker. It was an exciting time for many fans, which raised a ton of questions for Star wars go forward.

Usually, such a reveal is something a show builds on after years of planning. In this case however, that is not what happened. The idea came during the process, not before.

“No,” Favreau said when requested by the WGA if bringing Luke back was still the plan. “The story unfolded as I wrote it. The Mandalorian inherits a lot from the existing Star wars stories, and when I write, that context is always a consideration. It became clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to happen.

This means that if Grogu were to be trained by a Jedi, the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy at that time was likely Luke Skywalker. And yet, bringing the star back Star wars was not an easy decision, especially since its presentation potentially has an impact on so many other stories.

“We have enormous freedom available to us because of the time gap between films,” continued Favreau. “Dave Filoni and I are constantly in discussion about how each story choice is influenced by and would impact Star wars Equipment.”

We’ve discussed this in depth before (read it here), but Favreau is right. While it’s true that the comics, books, and games touch on Luke’s story around this time, and of course the movies tell the whole story, there are still decades in between. Return of the Jedi and The force awakens. Most of these stories take place closer to the force awakens (after the birth of Ben Solo, for example) The Mandalorian gets closer to Return of the Jedi. So much can happen between and, it seems, The Mandalorian will continue to explore more of this.
