Khalil Mack's trade will elevate or destroy Gruden's legacy
Being bold is part of how teams find success in the NFL. This is for on and off the field. This is one of the reasons why teams do not abandon generation players at the top positions. This is because they can be difficult to replace. Just looking at the best strikers coming in since being named 5th in the overall standings in 2014, that says a lot.
Demarcus Lawrence and Dee Ford were both selected in the same project. They have 34 and 30.5 bags respectively. Jadeveon Clowney, the number one overall pick in that year, has 29. Mack has 53. The only guy that seems to nearly equal that pace is Danielle Hunter, who has 40 since her selection in 2015. These guys are not easy to find.
With all due respect, the trio of players acquired by the Raiders by sacrificing Mack will not change their situation. Antonio Brown is now in his thirties. Trent Brown is a proper left tackle paid as an excellent. Lamarcus Joyner is a strong back defender who was fired by his previous team as they thought they could survive without him.
This Gruden speech is equivalent to applying icing on a carrot cake. It improves the flavor a bit but it always tastes terrible. The fact that he is moved after moving Mack, whether he exaggerates or not, makes it clear that he realized that his career would be changed forever.
Either he would be hailed again as the savior of the Raiders franchise, or he would be forever recognized as the guy who gave a Hall of Fame for a diverse mix of good and bad players who are not.
