Jon Ossoff says he and Reverend Raphael Warnock, Georgia’s Democrats fighting two rounds of Jan. 5 to decide partisan control of the US Senate, can win as a “team” straddling the state’s demographic shifts.
Driving the news: Ossoff made the prediction in an interview for “Axios on HBO” in which he also said that his opponent in the January 5 primary, Senator David Purdue, embodies “Trumpism in a nutshell.”
- Purdue made headlines last month for mocking the name of Kamala Harris, now Vice-President Elect, whose parents hailed from Jamaica and India.
- Warnock, who is the senior pastor of the famous Atlanta Ebenezer Baptist Church, which was the spiritual home of MLK, faces Republican Kelly Loeffler in the other Senate race.
- Georgia, long red, hasn’t chosen a Democrat for president since 1992, but now president-elect Joe Biden has a narrow lead over President Trump in results that will be subject to a recount.
What they say: “Warnock and Ossoff running together in the Senate double second round of the century is kind of a nice clarification of where Georgia is now,” Ossoff said.
- “A young Jewish son of an immigrant, mentored by Congressman John Lewis, and a black pastor, the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church,” he said. “This is the team at this time of transition for our state and this fork in the road for our country.”
- Responding to a series of questions about his views on specific policies pushed by progressives, Ossoff said he did not support the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, the expansion of the Supreme Court, the defounding of the police or the abolition of the ICE.
- He said he supported the creation of a state for DC and Puerto Rico.
- When asked if he supports ending the filibuster, he replied ‘maybe’ and added: ‘What I will consider are the long term implications when the shoe is on the shoe. other foot ”.
