Jordan Peele's horror film "Us" is full of references to pop culture, from "Jaws" to "Goonies". But perhaps the biggest point of contention is the right start. Attention, little spoilers to come.
The film about a couple (played by Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke) and their children hunted and brutalized by a mysterious family that looks like them starts with a scene from the 1980s. The character of Nyong'o is a little girl when her father wins him a "Thriller" t-shirt in a game room in an amusement park.
She puts on the t-shirt just before walking into a house of mirrors – a decision that will forever mark the character's life.
This "thriller" surfaced shortly after HBO's documentary, "Leaving Neverland," focused on Jackson's alleged sexual abuse of underage boys. The film brought many fans to ask for a boycott of Michael Jackson's music.
Has the current controversy created a conversation between the studio and the director?
"No," says Peele Variety earlier this week at the New York premiere of "us".
"No, we start in the eighties and it's a well-documented duality image and the film talks about duality," said Peele, adding that this nod was "a sonifier, and I of a lot of duality. "
