TORONTO – Jordan Zimmermann, the starter of the Detroit Tigers, has entered the top seven positions in opening day history.
The right-handed veteran was perfect for 6 innings and 2/3, after removing 20 Blue Jays in a row, before Teoscar Hernandez reached a mere infield in the seventh inning.
Zimmermann responded by hitting Justin Smoak to end the inning.

Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman was also eliminated in 5 2/3 before Nicholas Castellanos broke his offer with a single in the center of the sixth inning.
Stroman had eliminated six batters and had gone through four before giving up the singles. His throwing account would have made it difficult to hold nine rounds.
Zimmermann, on the other hand, was more effective. He had little depth and only reached the 50-run mark in the sixth inning.
Hall of Fame launcher Bob Feller is the only player without a defender on the first day of the history of the Major League. He completed the feat for the Cleveland Indians on April 16, 1940 against the Chicago White Sox.
Zimmermann launched in 2014 the first draw in the history of the Washington Nationals. He has never managed a perfect match.
There have only been 23 perfect matches in Major League history. The most recent was Aug. 15, 2012 from Felix Hernandez pitcher Seattle Mariners.
No Tigers thrower has ever managed a perfect match.
Justin Verlander was the last pitcher from Detroit to pitch a non-hitter. He did it on May 7, 2011 against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Center. He was facing the minimum in this game and was only at one step of a perfect match.
