Director Joss Whedon is no longer making his return to television as planned this summer. Through The Hollywood Reporter, Whedon has left HBO’s upcoming sci-fi drama series, Nevers. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a representative from HBO said, “We parted ways with Joss Whedon. We remain excited about the future of Nevers and look forward to its premiere in the summer of 2021. ”Whedon is currently under investigation by Warner Bros. for alleged misconduct on the set of Justice League, where he replaced Zack Snyder as director. Justice League Actor Ray Fisher alleges that Whedon engaged in “rude, abusive, unprofessional and totally unacceptable” behavior on set, and recently accused Whedon of digitally altering an actor’s skin color by post-production, which Whedon denies doing.
The Nevers was picked up by HBO for a direct serial order in July 2018, beating other outlets including Netflix. The series is ready to play OutlanderLaura Connelly, who plays Amalia True, a ‘threat to Victorian society’, leader of the group known as Orphans, which has ‘unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that could change the world’. Whedon was supposed to write, direct, executive produce, and serve as a showrunner on The Nevers, which reportedly marked the director’s return to television after more than a decade of absence since the creation and executive production of Fox’s Doll house. Whedon released a statement about his departure from the show:
“This year of unprecedented challenges impacted my life and outlook in ways I could never have imagined, and while developing and producing Nevers has been a joyful experience, I realize that the level of commitment required to move forward, combined with the physical challenges of putting on such a huge show during a global pandemic, is more than I can handle without work begins to suffer. I am truly exhausted and am returning to martializing my energy towards my own life, which is also on the verge of an exciting change. I am deeply proud of the work we have done; I am grateful to all of my amazing actors and collaborators, and to HBO for the opportunity to shape another strange world. Nevers is a real labor of love, but after more than two years of work, love is about all I have to offer. It will never fade.
