Journey’s Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain have resolved their legal dispute with former bassist Ross Valory and former drummer Steve Smith, ending a year-long battle that included lawsuits from both sides.
Journey sacked Valory and Smith last March, accusing them of launching an “ill-conceived corporate coup” to take control of Nightmare Productions, a business entity they claimed controlled the rights to the name. and the group’s logo. A lawsuit filed on behalf of the group said this belief was incorrect.
Court documents from the group’s lawsuit claimed that Valory and Smith wanted to “keep Journey’s name hostage and settle down with guaranteed income after quitting gambling.” The group sought damages “in excess of $ 10 million” and further accused the ousted Rhythms of “[destroying] the chemistry, cohesion and relationships necessary for the group to play together.
Valory, an original member of Journey, countered his former comrades the following month, accusing them of breach of contract and emotional distress. The bassist asked for “past and future compensatory damages” and asked a judge to decide who was entitled to go ahead with the Journey name.
Now everything appears to be water under the bridge. Journey’s Q Prime Management shared a statement which reads: “The members of the Journey group who were parties to a recent lawsuit (Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Steve Smith and Ross Valory) are happy to report that they have resolved disputes and reaches a settlement agreement. Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain recognize the valuable contributions Ross Valory and Steve Smith have made to the music and legacy of Journey. Ross Valory and Steve Smith wish good luck to their former band members and much success in the future. Journey looks forward to continuing to tour and create new music for their dedicated fans across the world. “
