Joy and sorrow – William, Catherine and George celebrate then sympathize as Italy beats England on penalties – Royal Central

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were joined by their eldest child Prince George in the Wembley Royal Box on Sunday as they hoped to witness the history of the sport.

55 years after winning the 1966 World Cup, England played their first major international tournament final: the European Championships.

Barely 117 seconds into the match, 25-year-old Luke Shaw gave England a perfect start, scoring the fastest goal in Euro final history.

As Shaw scored the first goal, TV cameras zoomed into the royal box with footage of a jubilant royal trio broadcast across the world.

Dressed in an elegant suit, Prince George could be seen clapping the goal, his father bursting with excitement beside him.

But the fairytale start for England did not last with Italy scoring a goal in the second half.

The match was then extended, but the teams still could not be separated.

Penalties then entered the equation with England hoping to put their poor shootout record behind them.

It was a good start for England with the Three Lions leading in penalties at one point.

But in the end, it was Italy who emerged victorious, beating England 3-2.
