Judge reviews application to unseal Jussie Smollett's file

It will take several weeks before a judge decides whether the public will consider the sealed court record in the Jussie Smollett case.

The Cook County Judge, Steven Watkins, said at a court hearing on Tuesday that he was not in agreement with the lawyers representing the media organizations, including The Associated Press, that there was an urgency that required him to make an immediate decision. The judge set a timetable for the motions and arguments that he thought would result in a written notice by the end of May.

The case was sealed last week when prosecutors abruptly dropped the charges of disorderly conduct blamed on the "Empire" actor. They did not explain why. The charges were laid after the police said their investigation revealed that Smollett had staged what he called a "racist homophobic attack" in downtown Chicago in January.
