A federal judge has so far sided with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. in its attempt to overturn Florida’s rule that prohibits companies from requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination from their customers.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in Miami on Sunday granted the cruise line’s request for a preliminary injunction preventing the application of the Florida ban on its ships departing from the state. Last month, the company sued Florida Surgeon General Scott Rivkees in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The Florida Department of Health and the Florida governor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move comes as Norwegian prepares to offer cruises from Florida to the Caribbean starting August 15. Florida is a cruise hub which, in 2019, accounted for about 60% of cruise shipments from the United States, according to industry group Cruise Lines International Association.

The company is sticking to its policy of requiring full vaccinations for all crew and passengers, including children, for first departures through October 31 after more than a year of disruption and billions of dollars in losses.
