Julia Ruth Stevens, the last alive child of baseball legend Babe Ruth, died at the age of 102.
His family wrote in a Facebook article that Stevens died after a short battle with an illness at a Las Vegas retirement home on Saturday. The family did not explain his condition.
"It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Julia Ruth Stevens, who died early in the morning of March 9th after a short illness," reads the message. "Julia was a loving wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother who led a wonderful and fulfilling life in her 102 years with us."
Julia was adopted by Ruth after her marriage with her mother, Claire, in 1929. Julia and Claire moved to New York nine years ago in Athens, Georgia, and Claire worked as a model and on Broadway Extra. She was introduced to Ruth by a mutual friend "and the rest, as they say, belongs to history," wrote the family of Stevens on Saturday.
Julia was Ruth's second adopted child – her other daughter, Dorothy, was her biological child, but he and his wife Helen adopted her to conceal the fact that she was born from Ruth's affair with a other woman – Juanita Jennings. Dorothy died in 1989.

The opportunity to travel the world with Babe Ruth and her mother was one of Julia's most cherished memories about the sport icon. In particular, she loved the tour around the world in which they boarded in 1934, including Japan with her family to attend 15 baseball games. Nicknamed the "Grand Bambino", Ruth set the record for the most circuits ever made in MLB history at that time, with 714 goals in 22 seasons. His transition from the Red Sox to the Yankees is what triggered the now infamous rivalry between the two teams.
Julia Ruth Stevens has been married three times. For the past 49 years, she has married Brent Stevens, a poultry farmer, earning her the nickname "The Eggwife" in their New Hampshire community.

In the last years of her life, she assumed the role of Babe Ruth's ambassador, representing her father's legacy at events nationwide.
She is survived by her son Tom, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
