Julian Edelman spent a good part of the pre-season away, and the New England Patriots suffered a new scare on Thursday night.
Edelman started the training camp on the list of non-football related injuries with a broken thumb, but returned to the game after the second week of preseason. Besides Josh Gordon and Demaryius Thomas, he had some reps in the pre-season finale, but it seemed for a moment that he had aggravated the injury.
After winning his first pass of the pre-season, Edelman came to shake his hand. He took off his glove and went to the bench to have it examined by the coach. Although he no longer plays the rest of the evening, he remained on the bench.
On Friday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media said the injury should not be serious.
"As far as Julian Edelman is concerned, I understand that it's not really what he hurt, so you should worry," Rapoport said. "Yes, it looked a little scary … (but) I understand that his thumb is fine and that his injured hand will be fine. This is not a major concern for Julian Edelman. And to reinforce this fact, he did not enter and did not consult a doctor, he stayed on the sidelines, did not seem to suffer. A little scared, but I do not think the patriots of New England and Edelman care much after last night. "
The reception depth of the Patriots has improved better and better than during the pre-season. Losing Edelman would be a lot less difficult than it would have been a month ago. But that seems like a moot point, because all the signs indicate that everything is fine for him.
