You may have heard that Cassius Marsh doesn’t like New England.
The journeyman tore the squad apart when he was fired in 2017, and made headlines again this week, claiming the Patriots “treat players like crap.” Marsh only spent two months at Foxborough, but when he was released he didn’t mince words about his experience.
“They’re not having fun over there,” Marsh said as he left. “There is nothing funny about it. There is nothing joyful about it. I didn’t enjoy my time there, you know what I mean? It made me, for the first time in my life, think about not playing football because I hated it so much. “
Apparently, criticism of Marsh returned to the Patriots’ locker room that season.
On The Ringer’s “Flying Coach” podcast, Giants coach Joe Judge said Julian Edelman had the most memorable response.
“When we got out of this whole thing in 2017 where it was like… ‘It’s not fun, it’s this, it’s that’… there was a white grease board on the wall (at the stadium Gillette), and it was empty, ”the judge said. “(Edelman) walked in and wrote in the middle of the board, ‘Winning is fun. And it was something that everyone read on the way in every day.
“He kind of got the message across to the whole team, ‘Hey guys, do you want to have some fun? Winning is fun. We are doing everything we can to win here.
The Patriots won the AFC in 2017 before falling to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, while Marsh has rebounded in six different teams since. Edelman’s message resonated with Judge, who at the time was the coordinator of the New England special teams.
“I’m going to be honest with you: I’ve had more fun in those eight years than I’ve ever had in the game,” Judge said. “That doesn’t mean it’s not difficult. This does not mean that it is not demanding. But the team culture in these locker rooms, the pleasure we really have in seeing the other succeed, the smiles, the hugs …
” They are funny. They are good guys. Culture is good. And I know outside it’s sadness, isn’t it? It is not the reality on the inside. It’s not. These guys were a lot of fun to train.
