Julianne Hough tries to dance to get out of this mess.
The former “Dancing With the Stars” pro took to social media to express her regret for a 2013 Halloween costume where she used blackface amid criticism for her new CBS show, “The Activist “.
The 33-year-old is expected to co-host the competition series, alongside Usher and Priyanka Chopra, who will judge all of the activists competing to promote their various causes.
In a very long Instagram post she shared on Tuesday, the “Footloose” actress apologized for the show, as well as the time she dressed up as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, played by Uzo Aduba, from “Orange Is the New Black.”
“The past few days have been a powerful display of real-time activism,” Hough began. “Thank you for using your voices, for calling me, for your responsibility and for your frankness. I listen deeply with an open heart and mind.
Hough summed up people’s criticisms of the show: Further, “the hosts weren’t qualified to assess activism because we are celebrities and not activists.”
She continued, “And because of that there is a sense of insult, dehumanization, callousness and hurt that is rightfully felt. I do not claim to be an activist and fully agree that the judgment aspect of the show missed the mark and furthermore that I am not qualified to act as a judge.
Hough went on to point out that “many people are only just beginning to realize” his blackface scandal of 2013, “which only added insult to injury.”
“Wearing blackface was a bad choice based on my own white privilege and my own white body bias that hurts people and that’s something I regret doing to this day,” she wrote . “However, the regret I live with is pale compared to the experiences of so many people. My commitment has been to think and act differently. Not perfectly, but hopefully with a more developed understanding than racism and white supremacy are harmful to ALL people. ”
The actress said, “I’m always listening because it’s such a messy and uncomfortable conversation, and I pledge to be there for it all.”
“It seems important to me to share that the initial reason I signed on to this show was because I was really excited to be a part of something that highlights and is all about sharing the work of activists on a bigger platform, ”she added. “In doing so, I felt it would help educate, mobilize and inspire people around the world to get involved in activism, as many worthy causes need attention, funding and, most importantly, power. to make real change. “
“The Activist” airs on October 22 and airs for five weeks.
