Julio Jones TD canceled by poor replay decision

After a tough first week on his debut with the Tennessee Titans, Julio Jones entered the table with a spectacular touchdown Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Or that’s what it seemed.

With Seattle leading 17-6 at the end of the second quarter, Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill looked up to find Jones covered by linebacker Jordyn Brooks third and fifth yards off the Seahawks’ 6-yard line. He exploited the gap, targeting Jones from the back of the end zone.

The seven-time Pro Bowl receiver lost his defenseman, jumped over the baseline and came down with the ball with both feet tapping the turf before landing out of bounds for what looked like his first Titans touchdown.

The officials decided it that way on the ground. But replay the officials however otherwise.

After viewing the capture from multiple angles, replay officials canceled the field call. They said Jones’ left heel touched the dividing line, voiding the capture. None of the angles shown on the CBS show showed evidence that Jones was going out of bounds. In fact, they seemed to confirm that Jones had landed well in bounds.

But the proofreading is final. And the Titans were forced to settle for a Randy Bullock field goal to reduce their deficit to 17-9.

The same Titans Twitter account that celebrated Jones’ alleged touchdown took note – and a not-so-subtle blow to the replay crew.

Coaches and players are fined for criticizing officials. In this case, Titans’ social media covered Jones.

Fortunately for Tennessee, the missed call did not impact the outcome of the game. The game went into overtime, where the Titans took a 33-30 win to move up to 1-1. The Seahawks fell to 1-1 with the loss.
