Gunner Stockton is going to make a lot of people happy today. Marquis Groves-Killebrew, the defensive back engaged in the 2022 class, will have a smile on his face. The same will be true of former Rabun County alumnus Charlie Woerner.
It goes without saying that Buster Faulkner, Todd Monken and Kirby Smart are also happy today.
But the idea here is that his grandmother Kay Duvall Darnell could make them all beat. Stockton is the youngest of his four grandchildren.
They are all quite unique youngsters in their own way, but the Rabun County Gunslinger can certainly carry and throw a soccer ball. It is ranked as the country’s first quarter of dual threat and the 27th overall prospect for the 2022 cycle on the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Her grandmother didn’t know the secret yet, but she has shared in the past how she might react to her eventual college decision.
“I’m a ‘Dawg and I would love nothing more than to see him wear red and black, but I support him in all the decisions he makes,” Kay Duvall Darnell told DawgNation.
Well, she sees that wish blossom today. Stockton posted his decision on Twitter that he made what should be considered his final decision in college. This is the type of old school rookie that would fit better in 1985 or 1995 than in 2020.
The choice was difficult. Probably the most difficult decision he has ever had to make. But he chose to play for Georgia rather than perceived as an Auburn favorite.
“He’s been on Zooms and talked with these two staff members, I mean it’s been crazy for the last three or four weeks,” said his dad Rob Stockton. “It was a whirlwind for him, to say the least.
What does it all boil down to? Conversations. Pray. I always try to treat people well. There was also the natural instinct to still find a way not to make sense about it all.
“Comfort and stability and relations with the staff and only the University of Georgia as a whole,” said his father Rob Stockton of the main reasons his son chose the Bulldogs.
It still hasn’t made things easier. When he informed Auburn’s offensive coordinator Mike Bobo of his decision this week, he visited the indoor facilities in Rabun County.
Stockton has just tossed the ball into a net for about 45 minutes. He didn’t want to talk about his engagement when he got home after that. He has just returned home.
The whole Bobo family is the “family” of the Stocktons. This relationship was an important part of his past engagement in South Carolina. This was before the staff got involved with the departure of Will Muschamp.
Bobo’s dad, George, was Georgia’s long-time high school football coach. During his retirement, it was he who really taught Gunner to spin a soccer ball.
“The stress level in our house has been very high,” said Rob Stockton. “We have the greatest respect for the entire Bobo family. The relationship that has developed over the past year with Mike and Gunner is one that is hard to forget. Mike is the gentleman, the competitor and the person par excellence. We have the utmost respect for him as a family. These pressures to say no and go in a different direction are not easy. Especially when it’s more than respect, but it’s love for a large group of people like family.
“I know Gunner feels like he’s turned his back on this group and he’s not. But he loves it and he knows what’s best for himself and he feels like University of Georgia and becoming a bulldog is best for him. We’re super excited as a family that he’s having this pressure on him.

What Georgia gets in Gunner Stockton
With this move, the Bulldogs now have seven commitments and a pair of 5-star rookies (Deyon Bouie and Stockton) for the 2022 recruiting cycle. This commitment should be seen as a building block for the UGA’s transformation into the new class. recruitment.
It should also be seen as Stockton’s final commitment. He wanted to put that burden and difficult decision behind him and focus on winning a state championship for Rabun County.
“Gunner wanted to make the right decision here and be done with it,” said Rob Stockton. “He’s convinced he did that. He’s super excited about it. It’s great now. Just awesome.”
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound junior has had a successful preparation career before. While he hasn’t recorded another snapshot, he’s already etched his name in the appeal of the most prolific and productive passers-by in Georgia high school football history.
He completed 213 of his 317 attempts last year for 3,128 yards in 14 games. That 67% completion rate was good for 45 touchdowns and just four interceptions. The remarkable dual threat can clock a 4.6 laser in 40 on grass. Stockton rolled those wheels for 1,581 yards on 191 carries and 26 more touchdowns.
The three-year-old starter threw 9,518 yards and 122 touchdowns in 40 college games. Now add another 3,416 rushing yards and 62 rushing scores to that total. That’s a total touchdown responsibility 184 times playing the squad in Rabun County.
The Wildcats have gone 35-5 in those three years with him under center.

Her mother, Sherrie, was an excellent basketball player in high school and college.
Georgia Stockton, her older sister, is a second manager and sniper on the Presbyterian College women’s basketball team.
“When he was about four years old, he attended his cousin’s football game with me,” Duvall told DawgNation. “As he sat watching one of the players on the sidelines goofing around, he turned to me and said ‘Grammy this player doesn’t care about his coach and the game.’ I knew then that we were going to have some interesting times watching him play sports. And we certainly have and pray to watch over him for many years to come.
Gunner Stockton continues epic QB recruitment for UGA
Stockton just wants to put his head down now and compete and improve. It’s the same way he will be at UGA. If he isn’t playing then he knows what to do to save playing time in the future.
He will look internally. Steps to the transfer portal for an easier path to a starting nod at QB. This is what the son of competitors and football coach instilled in him.
“He just thought he was a priority for his class and that he was going to have a proper chance to go compete and play for the University of Georgia,” said Rob Stockton.
That said, the decision here continues what should be an unmatched streak when it comes to Georgia, earning the signing of one of the country’s top high school QBs under Kirby Smart. Mark Richt and Bobo, ironically, also earn a lot of credit for the first name on this list.
